Foals – Antidotes ミニマルな音作り、ダンサブルなのに美しい 噛めば噛むほど味が出るとは良く言ったもので、聴く度にじわじわと頭の中に浸透してくる音楽を奏でるのがこのバンド、Foalsである。私の場合、フジロックでライブを見たのがきっかけだった。最終日だったこともあり、また演奏直前に突然降ってきた大雨やらで疲労は限界に達していたであろう観客すべてを圧倒し、別の世界へと導いていった。本国イギリスでは2008年を代表するインディーバンドとまで崇められ、先月ロンドンにて行われたアングラの祭典Field Day Festivalではトリを勤めるまでに。 それもそのはず、彼らの奏でる音はひたすらに美しい。アルバム全楽曲において芸術と呼びたくなるようなArtyな部分とロックの躍動感、焦燥感を両立させて魅せる。パンクという要素を持っているが他のインディーディスコパンクバンドとは全く違う。Foalsの楽曲はクラブで盛り上がるためだけの音楽ではない。むしろ一人で、マイクロフォンでじっくり聴きたい。その方が彼らの深さが堪能できると思う。 捨て曲なしのこのアルバム、Red Sock Puggieが一番のお気に入りである。静と動が織り成す５分のドラマ。傑作。これがファーストアルバムだなんて信じられない。めちゃめちゃエキサイティングなバンドが出てきましたぞ。 This is one of the bands which can grows on you in my view – You’ll be amazed by how much you will see new findings each time you listen to them. My first encounter with Foals was at Fuji Rock – they successfully blew away all the crowds, most of who must have been exhausted by the heavy rain and the fact being in the final day of the festival. They even headlined at the Field Day, London’s indie festival, despite the fact they just came into sudden prominence this year. One might think they are overly hyped up by the sound of this – however you will know that their quality is undeniable and they in fact deserve the credit once you experience their world. Their first album, Antidotes, is full of magical tracks and they maintain the quality the whole way though. Although their sound is quite dancy, they certainly differ from other indie disco punk bands - Foal’s music are too beautiful to be played only at the indie clubs – their songs can be also enjoyed by your stereo/ through your headphone in your place (when you are sober!) and you will be able to listen to it over and over - That’s when you realize how perfectly made those songs are. Minimal guitar, catchy melody which sticks in your ear and passionate drums makes this band one and only. Among those amazing trucks of the album, my favourite song is Red Socks Pugie.- the wonderful 5 minute-drama consists of tranquility and dynamism.
